Waiting by Erin Dennington

Chapter 9

Davis stared down at the accident scene 15 floors below. If nothing else, at least the damn reporters were abandoning their vigil and retreating. Davis was amused. As he watched, one cameraman, a big strong man, approached the car and attempted to peer inside. Even though Davis was too high to hear anything, he wasn't far enough away that he couldn't read the frustration and fear that emanated outward from the man.

Davis pushed the buzzer on his desk. "Maria?" he asked. "Hold all calls for me."

The answer was a shocked silence and then, "Sir, what shall I tell them?"

"Tell them that it's postponed. They've waited this long, they can wait for another day."

As Davis passed by his secretary's desk, he took in her startled expression. Fighting the need to laugh out loud, Davis said, "And while you're at it, call 911."
