Waiting by Erin Dennington

Chapter 8

The backpack slid off of Stella's shoulders as she plopped onto a seat in the waiting area. Drawing up her legs underneath her chin, Stella propped her chin on her knees and watched the people walking in the terminal. Her parents sat on either side of her, neither of them saying a word. The clock across from Stella read 6:43; if she was right, they would be boarding in less than 30 minutes. Her sister furiously sketched a couple sitting on the other side of the waiting room. When Stella peeked at the sketch out of the corner of her eye, she saw a tiny insect crawling across the page. "Hey, Rose, look," she said, pointing. Rose nodded and flicked it off the page. Stella returned to watching people walk by. 6:46.
