Chapter 78

She did not know where she was. She could not move, nor could she lift her head from the floor to look around. She stared at a speck on the floor for several seconds, trying to figure out if it was one of the insects or not. For a long time after opening her eyes, Christina lie on the floor, unable to do anything, even think. After struggling to sit up and accomplishing nothing but hurting her wrists and back, she had finally given up and remained still, cheek resting on the floor.

Her temple throbbed. She supposed that she had been hit over the head, which was not surprising given the circumstances. Since she had no idea where she was, she assumed that she had not been taken of her own free will. It was a rather easy assumption to make, considering. She groaned softly from the pain in her head before she was able to stop herself. Heart pounding, she listened for footsteps to see if anyone was approaching her location, but heard nothing besides the galloping sounds of her heart. The lack of discovery did not slow down her pulse rate, as the fear she felt only accelerated it even more.

After awhile her memory returned and she began to wonder where the others were and what they were doing. By now, they had to have realized that she had disappeared and that it was not of her own free will. A pain in her side told her that she had punched or knocked against something shortly after being taken from the waiting room in Davis' office. Christina idly wondered why no one had stepped in and saved her from her kidnapping, since Dc was a city that never slept. She figured that the snow storm must be the reason no one had saved her, but it was still enough of a worry that she picked at it for awhile, wondering if someone would soon come to her rescue.

Beginning to feel tired, she closed her eyes and allowed her mind to travel down paths that she had not permitted it to do earlier. She wondered why Matthew had come and taken her and where her children were if he was with her right now. Once the worry of her children came into her head, she found that she was literally unable to think of anything else save them. It was almost as if she forgot what was going on around her; Tommy and Becca were all that she had left in the world that she knew and she would be dammed if she lost them, too. But right now, she was so weary that she could not muster up the strength to do anything more than breathe. And that thought shamed her.

She sensed, more than felt, the change in temperature as the lights above her went suddenly dark. Christina imagined that a monster was standing over her body; a giant insect with enormous wings, ready to devour her. The thought amused her, since all of the insects she had seen lately were very small. She closed her eyes and let the darkness envelop her.

Above her body, a cloud of insects suddenly swarmed over a light fixture, and began circling it. They appeared to be in some sort of holding pattern.
