Waiting by Erin Dennington

Chapter 77

He stood in an alcove of the lobby, watching the two young men head into the laboratory. He did not follow them into the laboratory or particularly care what they were up to; he was waiting for the teenager to step out of the restroom in which she had locked herself and the cell phone guy.

He had followed the blond haired man out to the exit door and watched as he went back to the media van. Guessing what the blond man was doing, he had decided to head back into the lobby to stake out an area where he could hide and be shielded, too. His boss had been very insistent on him remaining out of sight and away from where he could easily be detected, so it had not been easy to find a location that was suitable. At last he had settled on the little nook where visitors could hang up their jackets. The television set partially blocked the entrance to the nook, as it was not intended for people to walk into it. That fact served only to help him further his purpose and follow his instructions to the letter, because the electromagnetic rays given off by the television set would shield him from anything that could go wrong -- not that he was planning on anything going wrong. Still, it could never hurt to be fully prepared.

Hunkered down, he decided that, if he was going to be in this spot for the long haul, he might as well sit comfortably. He leaned his back against the wall and stretched his legs out before folding them underneath his body. Placing his hands in his lap, he focused on remaining absolutely still and maintaining a quiet breathing rhythm. It was something his boss had shown him how to do when he was just starting out on this career path and he had discovered it to be one of the best things he could have possibly ever learned.

It was not going to take much longer before the girl decided to come out of hiding. He had seen the attraction between the teenager and the blond haired young man. He knew that, sooner or later, concern for his safety would becoming overwhelming for her and she would leave the restroom in search of the blond haired man. "It will be only a matter of time," he thought, "and then it will be done with."

His cell phone buzzed in his pocket and he slowly withdrew it and read the text message displayed there. Smiling slyly, he punched in a secret code and then hit "reply," waiting for the next instruction to come from his boss. This cat and mouse game gave him great amusement, gave him something to fill up his day with.

Still smiling, he leaned his head against the wall again and closed his eyes. It would not be much longer.
