Chapter 79

Marty did not like the man that he was talking to. He got the impression that the man inserted a stick into his ass every morning and took it out only at night. He was sanctimonious and condescending all in the same breath and danced around the bush instead of answering Marty's questions. Simply put, the man was a reporter's worst nightmare, but Marty knew that Bill could draw him out better than anyone else in the field.

A movement in the laboratory behind the man caught Marty's eye and he stopped speaking, trying to figure out what he had seen. A moment later the lights went out and the man sat absolutely still, as if he had been commanded.

"Holy shit," Marty said when the lights went out. "What the fuck is going on??" he asked the man but the man did not reply.

He was unsure whether he should remain standing or whether he should cover his head and cower underneath the desk. He chose to remain standing, knowing that Bill should soon be nearby. In fact, just moments after the thought had passed through his mind, he felt a touch on his elbow and almost jumped from it, before he realized that it was Bill. Bill did not say a word but set down his camcorder, breathing heavily.

Motioning for Marty to follow him, he ducked down and pulled Marty's head close to his before whispering into Marty's ear. "Are Stella and Davis still hiding?" Bill asked.

Marty told him that they were and that he still did not know where Christina was hidden. Bill sighed, stood up, and, with a hand on Marty's shoulder, led him over to the door through which they had come and told him to wait. Marty did not like being bossed around but figured that it might be best to listen to Bill, since it was still dark in the room and he had no idea if they were going to be attacked again. He did not like all of this waiting around, feeling that it was pointless; he wanted to crash in, take over the laboratory, and discover everything that they needed to know.

Bill opened the door and glanced around. With the door open, a little natural light came in from the outside windows and Marty had to blink from the sudden change. Again Bill leaned close and whispered into Marty's ear. "There has been a change in plans," he said. "It looks like Davis and Stella are caught up. Who knows when they are going to get in here?"

Marty nodding grimly, knowing that they were now the ones who would have to go in there and find Christina, save her, and somehow dismantle the entire operation while simultaneously getting a confession from Matthew and discovering who had been the source who had unleashed the insects upon them in Davis' office earlier. He knew that it was going to be a very difficult task and did not see how they could get a taped confession at the rate this was going, but he agreed to help Bill do something, anything, to bring Matthew down.

Listening carefully, Marty thought about Bill's idea and agreed that it made the best sense. They would try to stick to the original plan as much as possible, in order to give Stella and Davis a chance to meet up with them and help out. In the meantime, however, they were going to ignore Matthew's flunky and take charge of the situation. The fact that the lights were out was only a matter of small consequence. Marty knew that Bill could easily record in the amount of available light from the emergency fluorescent lights overhead. The only problem with just marching in and recording, of course, was that both Marty and Bill had a high sense of journalistic ethics and were unwilling to break them by making an unauthorized tape. What they agreed to do, however, was to go back into the laboratory and see if they could find Matthew. They still planned on doing an "interview" with him, so their first goal was to find Matthew.
