Chapter 5

After the sounds died away, Stella slowly reached down and picked up the rock. Attached to it was a dirty piece of white paper, wrapped in twine, and crisscrossed with ink markings. She hesitated to read it; she was unsure if the hesitation was caused by fear or whether it was caused by something much more trivial than that.

If this was what she thought it was...it would mark the fourth note she'd received this month. The fourth note that repeated the same sentence, "You aren't wearing it, are you?" The simple question had begun to unnerve her; she didn't understand it and she didn't know who she could ask about it. Her parents would pass it off as some sort of joke, but Stella had begun to suspect that a joke wouldn't get this much attention and care applied to it. No, it had to be something. What, she didn't know, but she didn't really care to read it.

Stella was a girl not prone to hasty decisions or rash action. But she was quickly getting past the limit of her patience. She stuffed the rock and note inside her backpack and tied her shoes.

Walking across the room, Stella glanced outside but didn't see anyone. She shut and locked the window and took one last glance around her room. Satisfied, she stepped outside of her room and joined her parents in the hallway. "I'm ready to go," she said. She slung her backpack over her shoulder and followed them down the hallway, locking the door behind them as they headed out into the balmy southern Florida morning.
