Chapter 4

Directly in front of Christina and her two children was a white van bearing down on them, its driver frantically trying to get the vehicle to move, to swerve, to head off the road.

Already stopped, Christina knew she had little to no hope of reaching the side of the road in time, but she had to try. Yanking the wheel to a hard right and disengaging the turn signal, she angled the nose of the car over the edge of the road and jammed her foot on the gas. The wheels spun, whining as the tires refused to grab onto the ice. Realizing her mistake, Christina eased up on the gas but overcompensated when her car started sliding out of control and swerved back into the path of the oncoming van.

Tommy was crying in the backseat, screaming, while Becca clutched her armrest so tightly that her knuckles turned white. "Oh, shit," Christina said, wrenching the wheel hard to the right, out of control be dammed, as the van made impact and shoved the car the rest of the way off the road.
