Chapter 11

Davis repeatedly jabbed his finger against the elevator's down button. "C'mon, c'mon," he muttered, "hurry up already. Hurry, hurry, hurry!" He watched the arrow on the elevator begin climbing from the lobby. Frustrated, knowing that time was wasting, Davis bolted for the emergency stairs and began pounding down them. It occurred to him that he might already be too late, but he angrily pushed that thought to the back of his mind and ran down the stairs, jumping off steps onto landings, pivoting, and skipping steps, racing to save someone that he didn't even know. He couldn't be too late. Not this time.
