Chapter 12

The engines on the plane were directly outside of Stella's window. Fighting back a yawn, she watched the ground crew drive underneath the belly of the plane and scurry around. Idly she wondered what to expect in Washington, Dc. Her thoughts were interrupted when her father leaned across her and asked, "Did you remember to pack your medicine?" The crossword puzzle in his hand was halfway completed and Stella knew he'd be finished by the time they took off.

She frowned at him and playfully answered, "Dad, there's no way I could forget something like that."

"Just making sure."

"And even if I did, it would be too late, anyway," Stella said, "as we're about to be taking off."

"Right," her father replied, "just making sure is all." He penciled in an answer on his crossword puzzle and tapped the eraser against his lips thoughtfully.

Stella smiled and returned her gaze to the view outside. Tugging her seatbelt, she fastened it tighter and tucked her hands into her lap. This was going to be a long night, she thought, since they still didn't know where they were going to be spending the night.

Rose poked Stella's shoulder and asked her if she had any gum. Stella reached in her purse and took out a piece of gum, passed it back to her sister, and leaned her head against the window. Rose sat back in her seat. Soon Stella could hear her sister sketching again, perhaps coloring in the couple she had so intently been focused on earlier.

Stella closed her eyes.
