Chapter 62

He watched as the Korean girl led the red-eyed woman back into the reception room and wondered what had been said. He didn't know what was going on in there, as he couldn't hear anything, but he'd watched the video and seen nothing disturbing on it. There was a man standing on a city street, who then walked to a cafe and sat in a secluded corner, where he faced the camera and began talking. He'd watched the man in the video's mouth move, but had been unable to determine what he'd been saying.

Checking his watch, he noticed that he had a minute before his boss was supposed to call him., He pulled his cell phone out and turned it on, stepping away from the door in order to ensure that those inside did not catch on to his presence.

As always, he had impeccable timing, for as soon as he turned the phone on, his boss called. Knowing what his boss wanted to hear, he went straight to the details and gave them as best as he could. When he described the girl and her mysterious and inexplicable bodily change, he heard the note of incredulity in his boss's voice.

He waited while his boss digested the information, and then added in the part about the bugs he'd noticed hanging around. Not knowing quite what part they played in everything, he told his boss that the bugs matched the ones in the video.

Then he listened, not saying a word. When his boss finished speaking, he clicked on "end" and then turned the phone off again. He wouldn't be needing it for a long time and there was no need for it to be on and hence run a chance of it being a distraction.

Whistling softly, he picked up his supply bag from the box and went to the elevators, getting to work on disconnecting them from their power supplies and emergency control systems. Then he wandered around until he found the security panel for the entire floor and worked on it for a moment. Once he had it opened, he stared at the multitude of lights inside, trying to figure out which ones he needed to trip up.

He found himself with theme song to "Gilligan's Island" stuck in his head. "Weird choice," he thought, but hummed along to it, anyway.
