Waiting by Erin Dennington

Chapter 44

The man who had helped Stella to her room returned to the lobby and staked out a corner chair, where he could watch the television and the elevator. Tall and lean, he was built like a runner, and was wearing a warm-up suit. He fit in with the one remaining lobby patron who was dressed in an identical style. Other operatives might take pride in that fact, but he didn't. It was part of his job description to blend in and he did it so well that no one had ever noticed him or been able to pick him out of a crowd.

He stretched his legs out in front of him and then braced himself for a long wait. His assignment was to watch this graceful Korean teenager and report her whereabouts to his immediate superior. He didn't know who wanted her watched or why, but he was thankful for such an easy job. It sure beat the boring assassinations to which he was usually assigned.

Behind him, on the iced over window, a colony of insects crawled along the inner ledge and onto the wall. Although their progress was slow, it was steady, and directed at the corner of the ceiling that held the air duct. The man took no notice of them, as his only concern was with a teenage girl.
