Chapter 43

Stella clutched her forehead in pain. The lights from the television and from the overhead lighting were flashing in unison with the left vein of her forehead. Feeling suddenly nauseated and unable to walk fast, she staggered down the hallway to the elevator, trailing her right hand along the wall. "Please, please, come quickly, please, please take the pain away," she muttered to herself.

Her mantra was interrupted when a kindly gentleman held the doors open for her and asked if she was all right. She couldn't even raise her head to acknowledge his question. "I have a migraine, I just need to get to my room," she said, wishing he would be quiet. He didn't get her telepathic hint, for he asked which room she was staying in, and unthinkingly, she blurted out, "312! Just leave me alone. Please."

"We're on three now. Here, let me help you to your room," the stranger said.

"Ok," she mumbled, letting him lead the way. He took the key from her outstretched hand and opened the door. She stumbled into the room and leaned against the wall, stretching her hand out towards him.

Handing her the key, he said, "I hope you feel better," and walked back to the elevator, which was still open behind them. She didn't even get a chance to thank him before the doors shut and she fell across her bed. Flinging her arm across her head, trying to shut out the miniscule noises and light, she didn't realize that an insect was crawling along her arm. When it reached her medical alert bracelet, it stiffened and then fell off, dead.
