Chapter 41

While in the lobby, Stella purchased a copy of Seventeen magazine and a ready-made sandwich. There was a TV tuned into a local news channel on in the corner, so she wandered over and chose a chair. Opening her turkey and cheese sandwich, she took a bite and watched a report on the ever worsening road conditions and then an update on this morning's accident. She sat up, paying full attention, her sandwich half eaten in her lap.

"This is April O'Neal, reporting directly from the scene of this morning's accident near the Mall." The reporter stood near where Stella had stood as she watched the scene unfold before her.

"While this morning's accident has already been removed from the scene," the reporter said, indicating the area behind her, "questions still remain as to the identity of one of the people involved in the accident. Authorities wish to question the woman who was driving a white Ford van. So far we have received no comment as to why they want to interview her, but a source close to the accident investigation has revealed that the woman apparently ran off on foot rather than give a statement. Our source has further revealed that the woman's van contained a highly sensitive governmental research project, and that the van was unmarked, with stolen license plates. We do know that a scrap of paper inside the van had the words 'Kramer Institutes' on it, the name of one of the world's premiere genetics research labs. The authorities have released a description of the woman and ask that, if anyone has information as to her whereabouts, to call the police non-emergency number. She is described as 5 foot 6, 125 pounds, with dirty blonde hair. Witnesses described her as wearing a blue windbreaker and jeans. Again, if you have any information, please call the police non-emergency number. This is April O'Neal, reporting live, Channel 8 News, Washington, Dc."

The screen faded to a commercial, and bored once again, Stella picked up her sandwich and finished it. According to the clock on the television, it was now 3:15.
