Chapter 39

Bill wasn't even aware that he had hung up the phone until he realized how cramped his fingers were. Looking down, he saw lines of red stretching across his palm. Flexing his fingers, he noticed a tiny insect crossing underneath his thumb.

Instinctively, he went to squash the bug, but stopped himself in time. If what Davis said was true, then Bill was looking at an insect that could make his career dreams come true. Carefully setting the insect down on the desktop in front of him, he searched for a suitable container in his desk drawer, but could only find an empty film canister. "I guess that will have to do for now," he said aloud to himself. He thought about putting air holes into it, but decided not to do so, when he realized that the insect could easily escape if he did so. He wasn't too worried about it living or not, anyway, so he scraped the side of his thumb into the canister and tightly sealed it.

He affixed a label with the date and time and slipped it into his camera bag, which he figured was as safe a place as any to store the evidence. No one would think to look in there. Then he hurried into his editor's office and shut the door.

"Sam," he said, "That story I am working on has suddenly exploded. It's something much bigger than I thought it was."

Sam, his editor's feet, hit the ground with a thud, as he leaned over his desk and rested his chin on his hands. Bill was assured by the confidence and trust that his editor was placing in him, especially given that Bill had never done any reporting for the station, but he wasn't going to let that stop him now. Taking a deep breath, he filled in his editor with everything he knew. Only half surprised, Sam gave permission to proceed and walked him to the door when they were finished speaking.

Slapping Bill on the back, he said, "I have a gut feeling about you, Bill. Try not to prove me wrong, eh?"
