Chapter 27

"You know me?" asked Davis.

"Yeah," Stella replied, "you're Davis Jackson, the world's premiere expert on cell phone technology. You made the first PC model phone! It was so cool!"

Davis grinned, astonished at the way her entire face lit up, as if someone had stuck batteries in and animated her.

"Well, I'm not that great," he said, "but thank you, nonetheless, for the compliment. And, since you know my name, why don't you tell me yours?"

"Stella," she gamely answered.

"Just Stella?"

She nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah."

They were interrupted by Bill, who called Davis' name and, waving, indicated that it was his turn to make a statement. Davis turned around to say goodbye to Stella, but she had already turned around and headed across the street. Behind her fluttered a paper. Curious, Davis picked it up. It was slightly crumbled, as if Stella had discovered that she didn't really want to read it but was unable to part from it.

"Stella, wait!" he called after her. "You dropped something!"

She walked back to him and snatched it from his grasp. "Thanks," she said and hurried away, but not before he slipped a business card into the note. He was dammed if he'd let this interesting person disappear from his life so quickly. There was something about her that intrigued him and made him realize that he needed to talk to her again.

Hearing Bill call his name again, Davis headed back to the police car.
