Chapter 24

Her sister and mom awoke and glanced around. "Where are we?" asked Rose.

Their dad shrugged. "We haven't got a clue but I can tell you that we're not going anywhere anytime soon," he replied.

"Oh," Rose said. She tucked her head against the window and immediately dozed off again.

Stella played with the car radio, switching from station to station, unable to find a single station that wasn't broadcasting the weather. Disappointed, she shut the radio off and groaned. "Some vacation," she thought to herself.

Unable to take the agony of sitting in a car after sitting in a plane for so long, she opened the door and stepped out of the car. "What are you doing?" asked her dad.

"Stretching my legs a little," she replied. Looking around, she discovered that she quite liked the view: there were trees all around, draped in icicles and snow, and appearing for all the world like they were about to tip over from the weight. Behind the trees directly across from Stella was the Potomac River; behind her, a line of buildings, all done in classical architecture.

Stella reached her arms up, stretched, and then twisted her torso around until her back popped, then she began wandering over to the side of the road.

"Stella!" her dad called. "Where are you going?"

"Just down the road a little," she replied.

"Well, don't get lost," he warned.

She laughed. "Dad, we're already lost. Relax."
