Chapter 95

"Whether you call yourself Mateo or Matthew, you are still the same person to me," Christina said. "You have allowed yourself to become carried away in your plans. You assume that we are here to kill you and stop what you are doing, but you never even considered the fact that we have two journalists with us. They came here to get your story. Didn't you always wish that people would understand your greatness?"

A look of confusion crossed her husband's face as he considered her question. She could tell that he was mentally struggling with himself to find a way to save face. "Well, if they are journalists, where's their cameras, their equipment?" he finally asked. A look of maniacal glee came over his face as he thought that he had bested her.

"They had to leave them in their van, because your flunky over there," Christina pointed over her shoulder, in the direction in which they had come, "wouldn't let them past to come interview you."

Again her husband appeared to digest the words, trying to figure out if she was lying or not. "Well, then why are you with them?" he asked.

"They needed someone who knew you to provide some biographical details for a personality sketch and, since I also knew the layout of the place, they asked me to come along, too."

This time Matthew did not even pause before vehemently replying, "Then why did I have to kidnap you before they even showed up here?" he asked. "It seems to me that you are lying, trying to save your own ass."

Christina would not allow him to manipulate her as he had done for so long. "We were getting the first part of the story together when your goon trapped us inside and unleashed those insects upon us. You decided to bust in and grab me before we could finish getting ready."

"Pardon me for not believing you," Matthew said, "but you don't exactly come with a sterling silver reputation, you know. You are not mentally stable and you are prone to all sorts of delusions."

She snorted. "Oh, is that so?" She knew that she would have to choose her words carefully, in order to prevent Matthew from doing what he had threatened to do. Unlike every other time that she had dealt with Matthew in the past 10 or so years, however, this time was different. She would not allow him to belittle her or hurt her in any way. There would be no turning back, either.
