Chapter 87

Christina paid no attention to those that were walking behind her. Her thoughts were directed only towards their goal and what she must do in order to stop Matthew.

She knew that Matthew's greatest fear in life was that he, too, would succumb to depression and suffer as she had. It was a fairly easy observation to make, since he had made her life living hell after the death of their third child. He would only fear that which he reviled, she knew, because that was human nature. However, even knowing this, she was not sure how they would be able to use her knowledge. They would have to convince Matthew that he had fallen into mental insanity -- which he had -- while convince him at the same time that she was better -- which she was. In doing so, Matthew might crack and fall apart and then give them the chance to do what they had to do.

So, with each step closer they took towards finding Matthew and rejoining the others, she resolved that nothing must stop her from doing the best job that she could. She would triumph over Matthew, and hope that the consequences of doing so would not shatter her, as well. Her children were all that mattered, and they would be the reason why she would do what she had to do.

"Here we come, Matthew," she thought to herself, "ready or not, here we come."
