Chapter 81

He took advantage of the darkness and halting footsteps in front of him to regain his control over the situation. He did not know who had been the one to turn out the lights, but he offered a mental thank you. It was making his job that much easier to accomplish.

He knew that his boss would be trying to reach him again in the next several minutes, but the need for silence prevailed. Sneaking his hand into his pocket, he thumbed his cell phone, commanding it to go into silent mode. Now if he received a message, it would not give off a telltale vibration and alert anyone nearby that he was standing next to them. He had always prided himself on his cunning ability to get into places unnoticed and it seemed as if he had another accomplishment to chalk up to his scorecard.

He knew that he should not let pride in his many accomplishments mar his thinking so he carefully closed his mind off to all thoughts of his past and focused solely on the present and his current objective. The girl was meddling too much into his boss' affairs and he knew that soon he would have to make a move and change that fact. He had no moral qualms with what he would ultimately have to do -- he had killed many people in his past -- but he knew that if he was forced to kill this girl, the consequences would be severe. There was definitely something to this girl that bespoke higher protection than any that could be found on this mortal earth. He knew that if he had to kill her, the repercussions that he would have to face would be great. He did not fear nor dread them, but knew only that whatever they were, he would not enjoy them. But he had made his choice long ago and he would stick with it. There would be no going back.
