Waiting by Erin Dennington

Chapter 70

Their breath froze and hung in the air in front of them. Marty found himself watching Stella, taking his cues from her. He realized that the others were doing the same thing and had been doing so ever since the insects had invaded the waiting room. He found himself wondering what she would next reveal to them, hoping that they could find Christina in time.

She tread carefully on the ice encrusted snow over to the car and, carefully running her hand a few inches above along its sides, she appeared to be searching for something. Marty didn't know what she hoped to see, for he didn't see anything that looked to be a clue to Christina's whereabouts. However, she apparently knew what she was looking for, as she suddenly stuck her hand inside the car and pulled out a scrap of paper. The look of triumph on her face was incredible and Marty found that, once he saw that, his doubts and fears were dramatically lessened. He wondered just when his trust in other people had begun -- he had never been a person to trust others to take care of things that he could do all on his own.

Marty craned his neck to see what it was that she held in her hand. All he could see was that she held a letterhead from some company's stationary, but he didn't know what the name said, which company it was. He tried to quell the disappointment that had returned with lightning speed to overwhelm his good feelings of only moments before. He sighed.

"Here's where we need to go," Stella said, holding the slip of paper out to Davis.

He took it from her and read the name "Kramer Institutes" out loud and studied the address on the paper a moment before tucking it into his pocket. "I know where this is," he said. "It's only two blocks away. If we hurry, we can get there before it gets too dark to see the streets and sidewalks."

He looked at the others and waited for their approval. Seeing that none of them were against the idea of going to Kramer Institutes, he led them at a brisk pace down the sidewalk. Stella walked beside him and Bill and Marty took the rear.

Trying to hide his fear that Christina was hurt, Marty tried to crack a joke but no one laughed. Shrugging his shoulders, he hunched over from the chill winds and trudged along, watching his feet bury in the snow almost to the tops of his shoes.
