Chapter 53

The man watched the 5 people inside the room with curiosity. He had no idea why they had gathered, but his place was not to question things. He was along merely to keep the Korean girl under surveillance and to make sure that nothing happened to her in the meantime.

He'd long ago set down the box he'd used as his cover when he realized that these 5 people were the only people in the building besides he. He rummaged around in the box, found a roll of duct tape, and began taping the edges of the door shut, making sure that the pieces of tape were overlapping before he put the roll away. Duct tape wasn't the best choice for barricading doors, but he knew that it would severely slow them down if they happened to start pursuing him. Then he got out his trusty pair of pliers and went over to the emergency override box, where the controls for the back-up electrical system were located. He deftly snipped a wire and tied the ends together with some electrical tape he always carried around in his pocket. Seeing the switches marked off for the telephone system, he took the liberty to go ahead and cut those off as well.

In the off chance that his boss called and wanted some affirmative action taken, he was going to be one step ahead of him. He was known for his pro-active work and mind-set. That's where the big bucks came from.

The cell phone in his pocket buzzed and he reached in and plucked it out. Pressing the "talk" key, he held it up to his ear and listened. After receiving his message, he turned the phone off and put it back in his pocket. He wouldn't need to it on for another hour, when his boss would call back for an update on the situation. But for right now, he needed to make sure that the girl didn't leave or escape him. He finished his job with the emergency override and headed around the corner of the hallway, searching for the other entrance to the office that he'd noticed while watching the 5 people inside the room.

An insect scurried around the edges of the doorway behind him, seeking entrance into the office. Undaunted by the duct tape, the insect kept searching for an opening.
