Waiting by Erin Dennington ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 33 As Davis waited for the elevator to reach the lobby, he stared at his reflection in the mirrors that flanked it on either side. The man looking back at him was lean and hungry looking, but not in the physical sense. His eyes appeared to see things that no one could see and his expression was one of confused clarity. His hair was a glossy dark brown and his suit was only slightly askew from his efforts out on the street. When the elevator door opened, Davis stepped in and pushed the button for 15. As the elevator began its slow ascent, Davis adjusted his tie and suit jacket, and only then noticed another tiny insect. This one was crawling around the floor, having fallen out of his pocket. It appeared to have been hiding in the handkerchief that Davis held now in his hand, and Davis frowned, puzzled, trying to remember when the last time he had used the handkerchief. It hit him with a startling clarity that this must be one of the insects from the car, as he could vaguely recall using the handkerchief to dry the sweat from his forehead as he worked to help free Christina from the car. Maria held a cup of coffee out to him as the elevator doors opened. "I thought that was you," she said. He could tell that she wanted to ask him for details, but he waved aside the questions with a tired, "Later." She hurried to open the door to his private suite -- his "home away from home," as he liked to jokingly refer to it -- and he thanked her. Leaning halfway out the door, he said, "Oh, and Maria, please clear everything scheduled for this afternoon. I will be doing an exclusive interview with Channel 5."
