Chapter 14

Somewhere over Georgia, the plane began to shake. Stella's eyes flew open and she gasped as her father's head hit hers. She turned wide eyes to him and reached for his hand. Finding it, she tried to calm down. "It's just turbulence, honey," he said, "we're fine."

She nodded and bit her lip, praying that the shaking would stop soon and that everything would be ok. All around her, she could hear ragged breathing and startled voices, whispered questions, crying. Behind her, she heard a ripping sound as Rose's drawing fell from the tray table and landed on the floor in the aisle. Across the aisle, a deathly pale woman clenched the arm of the man next to her, a look of sheer terror on her face. The man tried to console her: "I've never seen turbulence this bad," he said. She just gripped his arm tighter.

Just as suddenly as the shaking began, it stopped. No one said a word while the captain came over the PA and apologized for the shaking.

Stella discovered that she couldn't close her eyes again. "Are you ok, honey?" her dad asked. "It's ok now. That really was nothing to worry about."

She rolled her eyes and stared out the window, heart still beating furiously.
